Some of the most common questions I have received relating to the ministry of Understand The Times are as follows: Don’t you think you are travelling too much? Shouldn’t you spend more time at home with your family? Didn’t you nearly die in 2009 from a serious illness that could have ended your ministry? How can you afford to travel so much? Maybe you should spend more time mending relationships with the pastors you have offended over the years who don’t like your style of dealing with apostasy in the church? Or others say things like this: You seem to think the world is getting worse and worse. Aren’t you a bit naïve to think that the Bible can help us understand our times? You seem to think the world is going to go to hell in a hand basket. Why not help those that are poor right here at home in Canada or the USA? There are many other comments I have purposely left out to protect the innocent. Being a missionary is not without pain, overshadowed by people playing politics or being shunned by those who were once avid supporters. When the ministry appears to be in competition with another ministry, nasty propaganda e-mails are sent all over the world or blogs are formed to spread lies about you. Pastors secretly pass on rumors and false accusations. They say you are a powder keg and will divide the church. They call you a parachurch ministry with the potential to solicit funds from people in their church.
Please let me clarify: The ministry of Understand The Times is not my ministry. I do not own it nor does my board in Canada or the board in the United States. Second, if you have a local church you attend then I believe it is biblical for you support your church first. We do not, nor ever will beg for money, nor will we ask any church to support us. Some churches do. Most do not. They have their own missionary programs. Some pastors say the topics we present offend the members of their churches, especially the ones who donate the most. Of course this is not my objective. Others say that Understand The Times is not accountable to a board of directors. Yes, we are, and also to the governments of Canada and the USA. Many churches that have a board of directors are totally run by the pastor alone. Whatever he says, rules. It is the pastor’s way or the highway. If a board member has concerns about the direction of the “missions program” and challenges the pastor, he might as well pack his bags and hit the road. Perhaps an example would be useful as this point. Some churches have effectively supported missionaries in Third World countries for years and many have come to Christ. Entire countries have been influenced. As time goes by older pastors give way to younger pastors who have different ideas with regards to missions. Rather than send funds from the church coffers to far away Africa, Asia, Philippians, Thailand, Bangladesh, Fiji and Papa New Guinea, budget cuts are made. The new pastor claims he has been given a personal revelation and sees himself as a modern day apostle. He believes God is leading him to bring a revival to an entire country. Sad to say that country is in dire need of the gospel because it has been overtaken by other religions. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are diverted to the “new mission field.” The focus now is about reaching the postmodern generation. The postmodern generation requires sensual stimulation. Rock bands with strobe lights and smoke machines are hired. Young people are encouraged to attend because there are fun things to do. [1] Support for missionaries in Third World countries stops. Missionaries have to leave the mission field and come home. God’s hands are not tied behind His back nor is He scratching His head wondering what to do next. God is on the throne. He raises up missionaries who receive very little from churches and sends them out. God places a vision in the hearts of “nobodies.” These nobodies live very humbly and without concern for financial gain. They have one goal in common: They desire to change countries by preaching to the poor, the needy, and the sick. The battle they face in countries such as Haiti is difficult to describe in words. These missionaries are called by God and are led by God supernaturally. Satan attacks them constantly. While in Haiti, I saw true missionaries in action. Their actions changed my life forever. Understand The Times will do whatever we can as God leads us to come alongside them to rebuild a wall as Nehemiah and his team did so many years ago. Reports will continue to be posted describing the incredible things God is doing in Haiti as true Bible believing Christians are being led by the Holy Spirit.
