Bryce Homes Kenya March 2016
Report 5

In a previous report I mentioned the changes that have occurred in entire communities as a result of the Bryce Homes Program in Kenya. So many widows and families have come to Christ that a church has been constructed for them where they can gather and worship.

A pastor and his family were brought to the area by the program to teach and minster to them. As well, we have built him a new home and he and his family have a few acres where they can plant a garden. Compared to the house he was living in before, this new one is a mansion.

But in case you think he has a car and a car allowance this is not the case. Until now he has commuted from the location where he lives (about 25 miles away) over goat trails on a bike.

As I have stressed before, let me emphasize again; no one sat down with a pencil and paper and planned this model. There were no market surveys like those done by Bill Hybels and Rick Warren. There was a need in the community because people were dying of hunger and AIDS.

The gospel was a term no one understood. When the program started in 2011 there was no church, no Christian witness at all in this community. All there was can best be described as sheer hopelessness.

Some of you may remember the video clip I posted of the widows and orphans that met me singing and dancing in November of 2011. If you have never seen it, you will find it on Understand the Times YouTube channel. A “mzungu” (white person) had come to visit them from a far-away land. They were desperate. A white face means someone who may be able to help them and provide hope. Over one hundred widows and children were sinking below the waves of life. For them I represented the only potential life boat they could see on the horizon.

Immediately before leaving the country that year we promised we would provide for the support of five families. Over the five years the program has been in operation, these five widows (one of them an eighty year old grandmother) have seen their lives changed. First they received food, clothes, blankets and mattresses. Then a house was built for each one with three or more rooms. They received a stove for cooking indoors that was vented through the metal roof with a chimney. Their need for clean water to drink became apparent. There were many water born diseases from drinking water from the muddy river that made their families sick all the time.

The tin roofs were equipped with gutters and a storage tank collected water when it rained. Then we provided water purification systems. Latrines were built so they did not have to go naked in the bush when nature called. The widows and their children were able to take a shower in private without the fear of being raped.

However, these physical changes were the least important. Evangelism was happening at the same time. While constructing the latrines one of our pastors who was doing the physical labor witnessed to them about Jesus and presented the gospel. During that time all five widows in this rural area came to Christ. Their lives reflected joy they never had before. They told their neighbors and everyone in the community. Numerous villagers came to Christ Even men who were drunkards in the village repented and started helping out with the Bryce Homes program as volunteers.

As I write this I am reminded of the fact that even if you wanted to it would be impossible to script this all out. The move of God in this community is a modern-day revival. The Book of Acts is happening in real time.

There is no hype. No signs and wonders or people passing on “the transferrable anointing”. There are no worship rock bands. There is not entertainment at church. The widows and their families are taught the Word of God.

This is real Christianity in action. The widows and their children care about others. When children next door have no food, they share. Now that they have been blessed they want to help others who are in need.

Another thing is that most of these widows are working their way towards self-sufficiency. They have gardens, chickens, goats and even one has a cow. Some are becoming entrepreneurs. The successful ones are already thinking about how they can assist others.

We only had part of a day in this location so we made use of every minute. First we met at the church where we participated in the dedication of many children. Several widows gave testimony. I totally broke down. All I could think of was my son Bryce who really was the impetus behind this program. Without his death none of this would have happened.

After the dedication service we went to the river located about one mile away. There we had a baptism for two adults and sixteen teens. The river was quite shallow so it was a challenge to put them under. On one occasion I lost my balance and nearly got re-baptized myself. Nearby was a bridge and many of the town’s people who were still unbelievers showed up. The singing from the group had echoed throughout the valley and brought them there. The next day the pastor called and said the church was full of new people from the community.

By the time the baptism was over it was 4 pm. This meant we had 2 hours before darkness set in. We had to visit eight Bryce Homes in those two hours. For most of the homes we had to walk into the bush over rocks and briars. The time went by so quickly. It is so difficult to visit someone you care about and only see once a year, then walk away after only fifteen minutes. Food and other items were left with them. We took photos and prayed.

This year a lady contacted me before I left for Kenya who paints various scenes and then with her own handwriting puts a Scripture on the back. We handed these out wherever we went. The children were very excited.

My family gave all the children new shirts. I also framed a photo of my family with all six of our grand-children and gave this to every Bryce Home as a reminder for them to pray for us.  I know they will. They had never seen six white kids aged one to eight, standing together in one line. As well, they had never seen my wife, my oldest son and my daughter.

As darkness fell we headed out. By the time we got off the dirt road back to the pavement it was completely dark. If you have ever ridden in a car in Kenya after dark you will know what I am about to say. Only God knows how we made it back to our hotel that was about one hour away.

In Kenya, people walk on the side of the road at night about two feet from where the cars are traveling on the road. They also walk their cows, goats, donkeys and other animals. They travel in groups, wear dark clothing and don’t have lights. Both Kevin and I shut our eyes. I fell asleep but this was Kevin’s first experience of riding in a car at night. He was terrified.

We got home late and the following day was Resurrection Sunday. Both of us attended different churches. I gave a message about the Resurrection, a message that I put together early in the morning.

Let me conclude this report like this. I have been a Christian for 39 years. I have traveled the world and shared many topics relating to the Scriptures. This time I experienced something different that I have never experienced before. I sensed God speaking to me and through me in a powerful way. This is nothing that can be invented or manipulated. This is the anointing that comes from the Holy Spirit. The prayers of our prayer warriors back in the USA and Canada were being answered.

Maybe you would like to participate in this ministry. You will be a very important member of our Bryce Homes International team.
