EVIDENCE OF CATASTROPHE

The formation of the Grand Canyon can be interpreted two ways. Evolutionists say layers were deposited gradually over long periods of time and later the Colorado River eroded these layers. Creationists say the layers were deposited quickly and the canyon was carved by a catastrophe described in the Bible. What does the evidence say?

Dr. John Baumgardner is a scientist. He has a Ph.D. in geophysics and space physics from U.C.L.A. Dr. Baumgardner has served as a staff scientist in the Fluid Dynamics Group of the Theoretical Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico since 1984. He is well known for his development of the TERRA program, a 3-D spherical finite element model for the earth’s crust.

Dr. Baumgardner holds credentials he has been awarded for being an academic and an intelligent scientist. While he has been trained in the fundamentals of the conventional evolutionary worldview, he has stated his reservations about the evolutionary view on how the Grand Canyon was formed. Listen carefully, as I read what Dr. Baumgardner has written:

The cross-bedded Coconino Sandstone exposed in the Grand Canyon continues across Arizona and New Mexico and its equivalents into Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Kansas. Jointly they cover more than 200,000 square miles and have an estimated volume of 10,000 cubic miles. When one looks for a possible source for this sand to the north, none is readily apparent. A very distant source seems to be required. The scale of water catastrophe implied by such formations boggles the mind. [1]

It is obvious the language that Dr. Baumgardner uses to describe the Coconino Sandstone layer, points towards a catastrophic event. What kind of event could have happened that would provide the mechanism to deposit such a huge amount of material and bury the life forms found in these layers? Listen again as Dr. Baumgardner provides further details:

The sort of global-scale catastrophism documented in these layers implies a distinctively different interpretation of the associated fossil record. Instead of representing an evolutionary sequence, the record reveals a successive destruction of ecological habitats in a global tectonic and hydrologic catastrophe. [2]

So are you starting to see the picture? Dr. Baumgardner is explaining the evidence he sees at the Grand Canyon, (remember he is an earth scientist who holds a Ph. D.) Obviously, he overwhelmingly rejects the typical evolutionary explanation. Finally, consider one more statement he makes: “The strong observational evidence for the catastrophe absolutely demands a radically revised time scale to that assumed by evolutionists.” [3]

The evidence Dr. Baumgartner has cited is credible. The problems he presents challenge evolutionary views and demand the theory be revised or scrapped. Nevertheless, Dr. Baumgartner’s assessment of the facts would be rejected by traditional evolutionary geologists. They say his ideas belong in the category of pseudoscience, also labeled as biblical mythology.

This rejection evolutionists have for sound factual criticism that points to a worldwide flood, reminds me of what the Apostle Peter said would be the philosophy in the days before Jesus returned. People would deny that God judged the earth by covering it with water… and for this they would be willingly ignorant. [4]

I am Roger Oakland. This has been a biblical perspective to help understand the times.
