LIGHT INTO DARKNESS

Let there be light! These words are familiar to those who love God’s Word. For me, this phrase means more than you could ever imagine. The Holy Spirit has inspired the ministry of UTT to be on the offense taking the light of the gospel to the world. Will you consider helping?

…………………………………………………………………………….

Some years ago, a critic of Understand The Times challenged me with something I could not get out of my mind. At the time UTT was known primarily as a “discernment” ministry. When you are called to be a watchman on the wall, you are constantly warning people about spiritual dangers that lurk on the horizon. Many see you as “too negative.” I was told that the ministry of UTT was no longer valid – we were “against everything.”

Of course this cut deep into my soul. How could we be known as an organization that was against everything? The fact we were warning about deception, I thought, showed we were for Jesus Christ and His Word. Apparently, this was not the case. It was true. We did need to make some adjustments.

From that point on the LORD has shown us to be on the offense as well as the defense. We should be known for what we are for, as well as what we are against. Some today, you see, say you should only be known for what you are for. This I believe is a distorted view that comes from being purpose driven rather than Spirit led.

Whatever the case, since the light came on for me, Understand The Times has been focusing on taking the light of the Word of God to dark places. My recent trip to the Philippines has shown us another dark place that needs the Word of God.

The Philippines has a long and ancient history of being under the control of demonic spirits. Like other dark places, you can measure the degree of darkness by the lack of biblical truth. While some would say Christianity was brought to the Philippines centuries ago by the Jesuits, I would have to disagree.

Following the Jesus of the Bible delivers people from darkness and bondage to sin. A brief overview of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines will reveal this never happened. Catholicism has not done away with idolatry in the Philippines. Statues of “alleged” Christian figures have replaced the worship of fallen spirit beings. The worship of the Queen of Heaven in the Philippines is also an obsession. Whatever happened to Jesus who said, “if you abide in me and my Word” you will be saved?

Besides Roman Catholicism, the cults are the next most prominent factor deceiving the people of the Philippines. You name it – they are there – Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, Iglesia de Christo, and the Church of Christian Scientists. While in the Philippines we were in contact with them all. It was like a journey to hell and seeing the devil face to face.

So what can be done? Only God can help us make a difference. With the help of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, we will endeavor to serve Jesus by proclaiming His Word. This will be done in the future through Bible conferences and the spreading of materials by Philippino born-again Christians who are willing to serve Jesus.

Will you help us to support these people and their needs?

I am Roger Oakland. This has been a biblical perspective to help understand the times.
