March 16, 2007 - Virgin Mary in Bavaria Starts to Cry
 Article: Signs And Wonders

The believers could hardly believe their eyes. The Madonna statue in a hostel for pilgrims in the Bavarian village of Heroldsbach suddenly started crying recently. But is it real? The local priest wants to have the tears sent to a lab for an authenticity test.

Dozens of witnesses were on hand for the miracle. A Madonna statue in a hostel for pilgrims in the small Bavarian town of Heroldsbach suddenly began shedding tears two weeks ago -- fat drops of water running down her cheek and dripping off her chin. For skeptics, the photos are difficult to ignore. One worshipper even kissed one of the tears which had run down Mother Mary's cheek and plopped onto her hand.

"They tasted salty," Annegret Mewis told the German news agency ddp. "They must have been real tears." Indeed, virtually every one of the 60 or so faithful present were likewise convinced that they had just witnessed a miracle.

March 20 - Latin Mass Society welcomes Papal document on Eucharist
Article: Roman Catholic Church And The Last Days

The Latin Mass Society (LMS) has given a warm welcome to Pope Benedict's Papal Exhortation on the Eucharist published last Tuesday.

John Medlin, LMS General Manager, said the LMS hoped the Exhortation would play an important part in stabilising and resacralising celebrations of the new rite.

John Medlin said that it is important that the Holy Father now proceeds to publish his long-anticipated motu proprio to allow a much wider celebration of the Traditional Rite. This is 1) a matter of justice to meet the needs of the rapidly-growing numbers of Traditional Catholics worldwide in particular the young who find the Traditional Rite more fulfilling than the new rite. 2) to establish the Traditional Rite as the 'gold standard' against which celebrations of the new rite can be measured and improved.

He also looked forward to the publication of the new ICEL English translation of the new rite which would replace the defective current translation which was inaccurate and banal as a mail order catalogue. It was hoped the new translation would be more majestic and faithful to the Latin original.

March 16, 2007 - Ahmadinejad says Iran will stick to atomic work
 Article: Islam

By Parisa Hafezi

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran said on Friday no amount of U.N. pressure would deter it from its nuclear program, a day after major powers agreed a plan to impose new sanctions.

"We have a nuclear fuel cycle. We will not give it up under pressure. By holding meetings you (the West) cannot block the Iranian nation's path," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told a rally in the central town of Khatam, the official IRNA news agency reported.

A draft resolution agreed by the U.N. Security Council's five members with veto power -- the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia -- and by Germany was sent to the 15-nation council on Thursday for an anticipated vote next week.

It seeks new sanctions on Iran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment, which can be used to generate power -- as Tehran insists is its sole aim -- but also in nuclear bombs.

...The West fears Iran's atomic work is aimed at building atomic weapons but a leading Iranian cleric insisted on Friday Tehran was being honest.

"We are not lying. Our atomic work is for serving the nation, not for building arms," Ayatollah Mohammed Emami-Kashani, a member of Iran's highest arbitration body the Expediency Council, said during a Friday prayers sermon broadcast live on state radio.

March 19, 2007 - Who Says Halal and Kosher Don't Mix?
 Article: Ecumenical Movement - Misc.

BOSTON, Mar 19 (IPS) - If you happen to visit Fredericksburg, Maryland soon or other U.S. towns, you may find yourself invited to a local mosque for dinner -- especially if you are Christian or Jewish.

"Our community is getting more and more involved in bringing neighbours in," Zahid Bukhari, director of the American Muslim Studies Programme at Georgetown University, told IPS.

"It is a new phenomenon that is becoming more common," Bukhari said.

It's a way to serve up understanding and tolerance together with the delicious food that can be shared among local Muslims, Christians and Jews, Bukhari said.

The mosque events are just one of many interfaith efforts at work in the United States today, a devout nation where religion is very influential.

Interfaith activities that focus on social change are underway at all levels, from groups of national leaders and large coalitions of many faiths, to small-town dialogues among local Muslims, Christians and Jews. Unlike the religious right, which preaches intolerance across the airwaves, many interfaith alliances focus on healing and justice.

The Interfaith Alliance, a national coalition of 185,000 members and 75 faiths, tries to neutralise the influence of the extreme religious right in Washington, many of whose leaders enjoy close ties to President George W. Bush.

"It's so incredibly important for us to be in existence now more than ever," Kim Baldwin, director of policy at the Alliance, told IPS.

March 21 - "Bleeding" Jesus portraits draw crowds in India
 Article: Signs And Wonders

Thousands of people are flocking to a policeman's house in India's remote Andaman Islands to pray in front of two portraits of Jesus Christ, which are said to have been "bleeding" for the past two weeks, police and witnesses said.

Eric Nathaniel, a police radio operator, found red fluid trickling down a portrait of Jesus in his house two weeks ago which he believed was blood.

"We lit candles and prayed all night and a little later the blood dried but it soon started trickling down from the hands and heart of another portrait in the house," Nathaniel told Reuters in the islands' capital Port Blair on Wednesday.

Officials said red paint used in the portraits could be melting in the extreme humidity, but islanders and priests were coming in boats from remote parts of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago to pray.

"This is indeed a miracle and shows that Jesus was in pain because of our sins," said John Chrysostom, a priest at the Anglican Church of Port Blair.

One portrait was temporarily moved to the local bishop's house for public viewing after police found it difficult to control swelling crowds.

March 21 - A less self-righteous right: Republicans had better take notice
 Article: Social Gospel

You can't get much closer to George W. Bush than Michael Gerson.
He's the former White House aide who wrote the "axis of evil" speech. From 1999 until last year he was one of the president's closest and most trusted advisers, and among the leading evangelical Christians in the White House.

So when Gerson calls people like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson "dinosaurs" who should be more concerned with poverty and global warming, or when he praises Democratic Sen. Barack Obama on religious grounds, you can bet it's going to upset many in conservative circles.

Compare that to his warmer remarks about Barack Obama. "Someone like Obama has at least a feel for the religious basis that a lot of people bring to these issues," he said. "I think it was an important moment when Senator Obama went to Rick Warren's church. It was well received." Evangelical leader Warren, author of "The Purpose-Driven Life," invited Obama to speak to his church about AIDS in Africa in December.

Gerson's comments are sure to set him at odds with many on the religious right. Warren has already been attacked for inviting Obama, who is pro-choice, and for speaking out on global warming.
Yet Gerson criticized the Christian conservatives' traditional focus on issues like abortion and homosexuality, arguing this agenda "is not broad enough." More and more evangelicals are concerned with issues like poverty, Third World disease and global warming as well, he said, calling them "pro-life and pro-poor."

 March 21, 2007 - Today's Civil Defense Exercise Largest Since 1948
Article: Israel And The Last Days

The IDF Home Front Command is holding the largest civil defense drill in Israel's history today and tomorrow (Tuesday and Wednesday). Simulating a combined attack on Israel on all fronts, the drill was suspended for over an hour because of intelligence warnings of a genuine attack.

The wail of sirens were heard in most of Israel, from Hadera to the Negev desert, including Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Be'er Sheva, Raanana, Ashkelon, and Dimona. In case of a real emergency, the public was told it would be notified through the mass media.

...Magen David Adom, Israel's emergency rescue service, says today's was the largest nationwide drill ever held since Israel's declaration of independence in 1948. Nine MDA districts participated simultaneously, practicing to deal with an unprecedented number of simultaneous events and a very large number of simulated victims.

Tomorrow, on the second day of exercises, MDA will simulate a mega- terror attack with 400 casualties in two locations - the community of Neurim and in the coastal city of Netanya. The Police and the Home Front Command will simulate a Syrian rocket attack on Tel Aviv, supposedly knocking the Reading power station out of service, as well as a chase after a suicide terrorist in central Israel and a mass terror attack on a school.

Thousands of people will participate in the drill. The Prisons Service will rehearse mass rioting by Arab terror prisoners, hostage taking and attempted escapes.

"The aim of the exercise is to prepare the different services and bodies operating in the civilian environment for various emergency scenarios, while implementing the lessons learned during the conflict in Lebanon in the summer of 2006," a Home Front Command statement reads.

March 24, 2007 - Olmert Accepts Saudi Plan Basis; Shteinitz: "Olmert is a Danger"
Article: Israel And The Last Days

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's declaration Thursday that he is willing to do "anything possible" to attain peace may lead Arab nations to believe Israel is willing to compromise on defensible borders, according to Knesset Member Yuval Shteinitz, former Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Olmert said during a speech to national service volunteers in Tel Aviv Thursday that the 2002 Saudi proposal for Israeli concessions - which was rejected outright at the time by the Israeli government - was "interesting," and that the plan could be used as a springboard for new talks. He added that Israel is willing to make "sweeping, painful and difficult concessions" in exchange for peace with its Arab neighbors.

"This government will not miss an opportunity to dialogue with its enemies and will do anything possible to push this process forward," asserted Olmert

February 26, 2007 - Purpose Driven Churches Launch Large
 Article: Social Gospel

New church plants typically start out small, some as a Bible study in a home or in the basement of an office building. But pastors launching a new church planting initiative this year are telling fellow leaders, "Launch large!"

Hundreds of pastors and church workers are scheduled to attend NEXT Conference on Tuesday to play a role in a network's newest initiative - starting 1,000 new churches in the next five years. The two-day conference in Ocala, Fla., will teach the popular Purpose Driven church model - coined by megapastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church - for successful church starts across the nation.

The Purpose Driven Planting network, separate from Saddleback Church, steers away from the word church "plant" in its latest effort. Instead, it encourages a church "launch."

"'Planting' denotes slow growth ... like a tree," the Rev. Jim Cowart, one of the conference speakers, told The Christian Post. "We started using the analogy of 'launching' because the Purpose Driven model tries to teach pastors to launch large and healthy."

Rather than encourage a small start, NEXT conference is aimed to help pastors skip over all the growth barriers, Cowart explained.

One of the most common mistakes church planters make is starting with "a core group rather than a launch group," said Cowart. "It goes back to the old model of planting churches - starting small." Although Cowart is not opposed to small beginnings, he said the Purpose Driven model teaches the opposite - launch large.

"A crowd can be turned into a church."

 March 05, 2007 - Missing: a huge chunk of the earth's crust
Article: Creation / Evolution - Misc.

By Stefano Ambrogi

LONDON (Reuters) - A team of British scientists has set sail on a voyage to examine why a huge chunk of the earth's crust is missing, deep under the Atlantic Ocean -- a phenomenon that challenges conventional ideas about how the earth works.

The 20-strong team aims to survey an area some 3,000 to 4,000 metres deep where the mantle -- the deep interior of the earth normally covered by a crust kilometres thick -- is exposed on the sea floor.

Experts describe the hole along the mid-Atlantic ridge as an "open wound" on the ocean floor that has puzzled scientists for the five or so years that its existence has been known because it defies existing tectonic plate theories of evolution.

February 16, 2007 - Non-stop dancing helps Indian Catholics take new steps in faith
Article: Roman Catholic Church And The Last Days

By Francis Maria Britto

RAIGARH, India (UCAN) - Hailing Jesus' name, local Catholics sang and danced non-stop for two nights and days, their celebration reverberating through the sleepy Banhar mission.

Several of them told UCA News the Feb. 2-4 akhand keertan, a program of non-stop devotional chants, helped revive their weakened faith.

The Catholics, members of Raigarh Diocese in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, are Gada people, a dalit group. They adopted this form of worship from Hindu practice. The Sanskrit term dalit literally means "trampled upon" and denotes people belonging to groups formerly called "untouchable."

"Faith is dying here, (and we) want to bring awakening," Bishop Paul Toppo of Raigarh explains. Akhand keertan "has become an entry point," the prelate told UCA News on Feb. 4 at the rural Banhar mission. He is based in Raigarh town, 1,750 kilometers (about 1,085 miles) southeast of New Delhi.

March 21, 2006 - Iran warns of 'illegal' steps over nukes
Article: Wars And Rumors Of Wars

By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's top leader warned Wednesday his country will pursue "illegal actions" if the U.N. Security Council insists it halt uranium enrichment, an apparent reference to nuclear activities outside international regulations.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also warned the United States that Iran would fight back with "all its capacities" if attacked.

"Until today, what we have done has been in accordance with international regulations," Khamenei said. "But if they take illegal actions, we too can take illegal actions and will do so."

Iran says it will never give up its right under the treaty to enrich uranium and produce nuclear fuel. But it has offered to provide guarantees that its nuclear program won't be diverted toward weapons - as the U.S. and some of its allies fear

 March 21, 2007 - Jimmy Carter's Bible Class
 Article: Apsotasy

By Lisa Miller

March 21, 2007 - Jimmy Carter has been a Sunday-school teacher his entire life, and this week, Simon & Schuster releases "Sunday Mornings in Plains," audio recordings of the President's Bible-study classes at his church, Maranatha Baptist Church, in Plains, Ga.

...NEWSWEEK's Lisa Miller spoke with Carter about his vision of God, the power of the religious right, and what he's learned from the controversy over his recent book, "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid." Excerpts:

A new book, "Religious Literacy," by Stephen Prothero, argues that religion should be taught in public schools. Do you agree?

I wouldn't have any aversion to that. To teach a comparative religions course, to compare Christianity with Judaism and Islam and Hinduism and so forth, would be constructive. It would show that there is a compatibility among them all. I can't claim to be a scholar, but when our hostages were being held by Iran when I was president, I read the Quran, and I had Islamic scholars come and talk to me. The basic human-behavior principles were the same. The Islamic Bible, the Quran, teaches peace and justice and care for one's neighbor and helping the poor. I would not be in favor of public schools endorsing Christianity.

Do you think a Mormon is a Christian?

Yes, I do. I have a cousin who is a Mormon and she married one of the Marriott family. I don't know anyone who's more devout in their faith than she and her family. I admire them very much.
