News Alert - September 14 - Radio Station in Texas cancels David Barton's Wallbuilders Live During Show
 Article: Miscellanous

Comment from Understand the Times:
For some time UTT has been warning about false statements promoted by David Barton, including the promotion of Glenn Beck, a professed Mormon as a born-again Christian. Now there is evidence that some are beginning to wake up and see what it going on as per the following news item. It will be interesting to see if Calvary Chapel pastors who have been promoting David Barton and Glenn Beck will follow and make a public announcement.

An affiliate radio station of the Moody Network in East Texas, KBJS-FM canceled David Barton's Wallbuilders Live radio program during the show yesterday while Barton was discussing Glenn Beck's religious beliefs. Randy Featherstone, KBJS manager, said the show was dropped due to Barton's failure to distinguish between Mormon theology and Christianity.

"When David Barton said it doesn't matter whether you are a Mormon or a Baptist or a Methodist, we felt we had to do something," Featherstone explained.

On the Tuesday program, Barton played audio of Glenn Beck saying that "the Lord Jesus Christ is my Savior and my Redeemer." Then Barton said he believed that Beck was a Christian based on his statement of belief and "his fruits," meaning his good deeds. Based on Beck's statements, Barton then asked co-host Rick Green, "Glenn says he's Mormon. Ok, that's fine. Based on what you heard, if you heard a Baptist say that or if you heard a Methodist say that      what would you say?" After Green answered that Beck's testimony indicated a real conversion, Barton responded, "Why is it not a real conversion because of the label he wears?"

Throughout the program, Barton dismissed Beck's Mormonism, saying at one point, "I don't care what label Beck wears. I don't care what Glenn thinks Mormon means." Barton also asserted that Beck uses the same Bible, but added, "Now he may use the Book of Mormon, we never talked about the Book of Mormon."

Featherstone added that the station received many calls during the broadcast with callers who objected to Barton's views. All but two callers supported the decision of the station to drop the show. Some callers also complained that Barton misuses history and "takes facts out of context" to create a false impression about the Constitution and founding of the nation, according to Featherstone.

Featherstone said the station did not take the action lightly, saying "I like a lot of what Barton has to say, but we don't want to confuse listeners into thinking that Mormon doctrine and Christianity are the same."

September 6 - Spectre of fresh EU treaty returns to haunt 'incomplete' Europe
 Article: One World Government

It took nearly a decade of squabbling amongst EU states, a series of referendum disasters and a last-minute game of high-stakes brinksmanship from a stubborn Czech president, but the bloc finally managed to radically refashion the way it worked with the passage of the Lisbon Treaty in 2010. So exhausted were they by the struggle by the time the soap opera ended, European leaders then swore it would be very long indeed, perhaps a generation, before the EU treaties would be opened again.

But now, in the last few days, as Europe's economy and the single currency stand on the precipice, these same leaders have begun to eat their words.

On Tuesday, German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble called for the second time in a week for changes to the treaties. "Strengthening the eurozone's architecture ... may need profound treaty changes," he wrote in an opinion piece for the Financial Times.

According to populist daily Bild, the finance minister made the argument for a major shift in fiscal policy-making powers to Brussels, a move that would almost certainly necessitate a fresh opening of the treaties holding the bloc together. This must be done, he said, "even though we know how difficult a treaty change will be."

The outgoing head of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, for his part on Monday told participants at a Paris conference that the bloc required a European "federal government with a federal finance minister."

"We are discovering that we cannot live with this incompleteness any more."

Gerhard Schroeder, the former German chancellor on Sunday said "Countries will have to give up some of their national sovereignty." His vision involves fiscal powers being given to the commission or a European finance minister under the control of the European Parliament as "the ultimate authority". "The commission will have to be turned into a government that is controlled, in parliamentary terms, by the European Parliament. That translates into a United States of Europe."

A newly established think-tank, the Council on the Future of Europe, whose members include Schroeder, Tony Blair, former commission president Jacques Delors, former Spanish prime minister Felipe Gonzalez and economists Nouriel Roubini and Joseph Stiglitz on Monday issued a manifesto that called not just full fiscal union, but for parallel political union.

"It will be necessary to further lay out a vision of a federation that goes beyond a fiscal and economic mandate to include a common security, energy, climate, immigration and foreign policy as well as develop a common narrative about the future of the union and its place in the world," the document read. "Nation states will need to share certain dimensions of sovereignty to a central European entity that would have the capacity to source revenue at the federal level in order to provide European-wide public goods."

September 13 - A Call From the Altar
Article: Roman Catholic Church And The Last Days

Benedict XVI closed Italy's 25th National Eucharistic Congress on Sunday. The occasion offered a chance to reflect on the power of the Eucharist, and the practice of 24-hour Eucharistic adoration. ZENIT spoke with Father Alberto Pacini, the rector of Rome's Church of St. Anastasia al Palatino. He spoke of the results of daring to open his church at unlikely hours and expose Christ on the altar, even if he was the only one to adore him.
ZENIT: What is the meaning of the Eucharist for the Catholic faith?
Father Pacini: In this sacrament Jesus gives us his body and blood, with the words and gestures, which he commanded his own to perpetuate to be present with us always: "Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age" (Matthew 28:20). In this sacrament the Lord makes himself present in an altogether particular way -- in a substantial way, that is, not only a spiritual presence, but also with his body, blood, soul and divinity -- to be food and medicine of immortality. "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:54). Hence, this sacrament is God present in our midst today and always, so that every time we eat him we live through him; every person who approaches this sacrament comes into contact with God the Creator and Savior, with all his divine power of love, with his supreme and infinite mercy. He experiences the Father's embrace of love, who has prepared his wedding table, and all his "prodigal children" who, having accepted the invitation, return home (Luke 15:11-32).
ZENIT: Why is it so important for the Catholic faith?
Father Pacini: The Eucharist is not only important for the Catholic faith, as Blessed John Paul II wrote in No. 8 of Ecclesia de Eucharistia: "Because even when it is celebrated on the humble altar of a country church, the Eucharist is always in some way celebrated on the altar of the world. It unites heaven and earth. It embraces and permeates all creation. The Son of God became man in order to restore all creation, in one supreme act of praise, to the One who made it from nothing. He, the Eternal High Priest who by the blood of his Cross entered the eternal sanctuary, thus gives back to the Creator and Father all creation redeemed."
Whether or not the men and women of this world know it, they are involved in the salvific action of the Son of God made Son of Man, present now in a definitive way in this world. The Catholic Church guards this mystery, in perfect and uninterrupted communion among the bishops of the whole world and with the Apostles, through the apostolic transmission. The Catholic Church guards this treasure, the most precious that exists, not only in her faith, indefectible through the action of the Holy Spirit, but also in her celebration and her adoration and in all the tabernacles of the world. Radiating from the Eucharist in an inexhaustible way is the Holy Spirit, as from the side of Christ pierced out of love, and he fills the whole world with his salvific power, so that in the words of Benedict XVI to the 23rd WYD, we can say: "Source and summit" of the ecclesial life, the Eucharist is a "perpetual Pentecost." In this perpetual Pentecost the Spirit acts not only in the Church, but also for the benefit of the whole of humanity.

September 14 - Benedict XVI Warns That We Can Make Earth a Hell
Article: Ecumenical Movement - Roman Catholics Uniting With Other Religions

We can make the planet into a hell by failing to accept one another, or we can learn to live together, open up and give ourselves, says Benedict XVI.
The Pope offered this reflection in a message to an interreligious meeting that concluded Tuesday in Munich. The event was sponsored by the Catholic lay Community of Sant'Egidio.
"The theme of the peace meeting, 'Bound to live together,' reminds us that we as human beings are bound to each other. This living together is in fact a precondition that derives from our being human. And it is our duty to give it a positive content," the Holy Father said in his message.
He reflected that living together can "transform itself into living against one another." It "can become a hell if we do not learn to accept one another, if everyone only wants to be himself or herself."
"But," the Holy Father continued, "it can also be a gift when we open up to one another, when we give ourselves to one another." He proposed that religious and cultural coexistence should be seen as a "task and a gift" so as to find the "true way to live together." Benedict XVI also pointed out that this coexistence is no longer a regional or local challenge, but now exists at a global scale, involving humanity as a whole.
The Pontiff went on to say that religion is "essentially linked to the question of peace. "When religion fails in this meeting with God, when it pulls him down to us instead of raising us up to him, when we, so to say, make him our possession, then it can contribute to the destruction of peace," he cautioned. "But if it finds the way to the divine, to the creator and redeemer of all people, then it is a force for peace."

September 13 - US Homeland Security now tracking medical records of Canadians
 Article: One World Government

If you are a Canadian citizen trying to visit the US, but have a history of mental illness -- even just a minor, non-violent incident that was recorded in official records -- you could be denied entry by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), according to a recent report by CBCNews in Canada.

Sixty-five year old Lois Kamenitz from Toronto found this out the hard way recently when US customs officials at Pearson International Airport (PIA) refused to allow her to board a flight she booked to Los Angeles, Cal. Because Kamenitz had tried to take her life back in 2006, which was recorded by police who were present after the woman's partner called them to the scene, DHS ultimately refused her entry.

When questioned about the incident, DHS officials claimed they did not actually access Kamenitz' medical records, but instead obtained information via a "contact note from the police" that had visited her home. According to a Wikileak report released earlier this year, all information that is entered into the Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database, including Kamenitz' suicide incident, is fully accessible to US authorities.

In Kamenitz' case, her suicide attempt was not a crime, it did not involve violence, and she has not had any further incidents since that date. But because DHS was able to access her private information without so much as a cursory review of the circumstances, they ultimately prevented her from traveling on the basis that she might be a threat to herself or others.

But the real question is this. Why do US authorities have access to private information about Canadians in the first place? CBCNews explains that both the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and DHS have "reciprocal direct access" to criminal databases, but it also appears that they might have reciprocal access to details, which they then use to gain further access to private medical records.

September 14 - New Poll Says Majority of Americans Favor Same-Sex Marriage
 Article: Perilous Times

A new poll by The Associated Press and the National Constitution Center released Wednesday shows that the majority of Americans is shifting towards supporting legalization, even as recent votes in many states show voters in solid support of defining marriage as between one man and one woman.
The poll concludes that 53 percent of the 1,000 adults surveyed believe the government should give legal recognition to marriages between couples of the same sex. In comparison, 44 percent were opposed. It was just in 2009, according to AP, that the majority rested on the side of opposition.
Some of the shift stems from a generational divide, with the new poll showing a majority of Americans under age 65 in favor of legal recognition for same-sex marriages, and a majority of seniors opposed.

"Can these results be trusted?" Mathew Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, questioned in an interview with The Christian Post, "there's often a big difference between what the polls say and how people really feel, how they really vote."If you pass same sex marriage, then that places homosexuality on the same level as race. But it has a profound impact on our liberty."

The impact he describes regards forcing Christian or other religious workers to be forced to adapt their business policies to accept a pro-gay agenda. There have already been several lawsuits against Christian business owners who refuse to serve homosexual couples due to religious beliefs.

Also, many opponents of homosexual marriage claim that children do better when raised with a mother and a father. If gay marriage is legalized, the couple will more than likely be able to adopt or have children.

The poll also concludes that 48 percent of the respondents said they would favor an amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman. About 40 percent would strongly favor such a change, 43 percent said they would oppose such an amendment, and eight percent were neutral on the issue.

September 14 - Obama 'Tattletale' Website Encourages Supporters to Report Negative Info
 Article: Miscellaneous

The Obama campaign, known for being technologically savvy, launched a new website today called "Attack Watch." The website serves to fight back against accusations launched at Obama, labeling them as "smears" and "lies."
The site resembles the fact-checking site Politifact. The black and red color scheme lets viewers know that this is a battle and they are on the front lines combating the "enemies" of Obama's policies and positions. For example, the tag line at the top of the website states, "Get the Facts, Fight the Smears."

Attack Watch features hot topics that are in the news concerning Obama's policies and provides links to professional fact-checking sites such as Media Matters. However, the site also has a section where the viewer can report, "lies," "rumors," and "smears" they encounter either by word of mouth, email, articles seen in newspapers, video and other sources.

"There are a lot of folks on the other side who are chomping at the bit to distort the President's record. It's not a question of if the next big lie will come, just when - and what we're prepared to do about it," said Jim Messina, campaign manager for Obama for America in an email released Tuesday.

However, the premiere of the website might not have gone according to plan. The site is a throwback to Obama's 2008 campaign website, "Fight the Smears," which had similar motivations to combat negative statements against his campaign. It also mirrors the hotly contested email account, flagh@whitehouse.gov, in which citizens were encouraged to inform Obama of negative things said about his healthcare policies in 2009.

Many people, conservatives in particular, see this as a "tattle-tell" or an Orwellian-like website. The new campaign site also has a Twitter feed, @AttackWatch, for people to follow for updates. It is currently a trending topic on Twitter, perhaps, for very different reasons the Obama team was hoping to achieve. It has instead become a new punching bag for Republicans and conservatives who claim the president has thin skin when it comes to critiques of his policies.

September 15 - Religious leaders of all faiths promotes global tolerance
 Article: One World Religion

Religious leaders of all stripes, gowns and headgear gathered in Jerusalem's Mishkenot Sha'ananim neighborhood Wednesday to attend the third annual Interfaith Ethics and Tolerance conference. Bringing together Jewish and Muslim clerics, as well as clergy from numerous Christian denominations and those of the Bahai and Hindu faiths, the conference this year focused on the role of spiritual leaders in promoting peace and tolerance as well as the challenges of religious leadership in today's globalized world.

Our organization has taken on the task of working to improve the ethical behavior of all peoples and all the adherents of all religions," said Rabbi Yuval Cherlow of the Jerusalem Center for Ethics and head of the Petah Tikva Hesder yeshiva. "Unfortunately, the world is full of religious leaders who are part of the problem at the moment, so we are looking for ways in which religious leaders can be part of the solution."

A series of blessings was also intoned by the assembled clergy, followed by the release of dozens of white balloons into the azure blue sky
, some of which didn't get stuck in a nearby tree.

"The problems of tolerance and intolerance are universal," said Father Aleksander Archdeacon of Poland and representative of the Polish Orthodox Church to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

"In general, religion had done more to promote intolerance, warfare and hatred throughout history than anything else," he told The Jerusalem Post. "As a religious person, I have to ask myself 'How do I not compromise myself and my faith while at the same time not be guilty, as others have in the past, of promoting intolerance.'" Rabbi Cherlow was more circumspect about the notion of an ethical world without religion when relating to the claims of modern secularists that religion has caused division and conflict in the modern world.

September 12 - India: Hindu nationalist BJP leader LK Advani prays at Marian shrine
 Article: Bridges To Rome

Comment from Understand the Times:
UTT has gone on record in the past stating that the "Queen of All" will be a major factor in uniting the religions of the world. "Mary" who is also called the Queen of Heaven originated in Babylon and is key to understanding the One World Religion for Peace that the Bible predicts will be part of the Last Days. This is the Jesuit plan that is also supported by another puppet group they founded - the Masons. Of course, the pope of Rome is also supportive of this plan.

Shri L.K. Advani, a former leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJ), a Hindu nationalist party, visited the Marian shrine at Mount Mary's Basilica in Bandra, Mumbai, where he placed a garland of red flowers and two candles at the foot of the main altar below the statue of Our Lady. Out of reverence and devotion, he prayed for a few minutes. Along with the Basilica's Vice Rector, Fr Aniceto Pereira, he recited the Memorae. Fr Pereira gave him as a gift a book on the history of the shrine written by Mgr Francis Correia.

The visit has surprised many people given the fact that the BJP is often seen as the moved of anti-Christian violence. Speaking to local media, LK Advani said that local BJP leaders had invited him to visit the shrine. He also said that he is an alumnus of the St. Patrick High School in Karachi, which is run by the Irish Christian Brothers. "Since I have links with the community, I feel happy coming here, meeting the priests here, participating in the prayers and getting the Blessings."

"LK Advani showed great respect for our shrine and religion,"
Fr Aniceto Pereira told AsiaNews. "A political leader who asks for God's grace and help means a lot to us."

"I prayed to God to guide our leaders and bless them," the vice rector added. "I know that Christians in other states face a security threat, but the BJP leader came here as a pilgrim, full of faith to ask for Mary's blessing and grace."

The Marian shrine in Bandra is a place of harmony and interfaith dialogue because the Virgin draws people of all creeds.
"Since the novena began on the 2 September (leading up to Mary's Nativity), more than 15,000 people have visited the shrine daily. Just 30 per cent of them are Christians, the rest belong to other religions."

"Through Mary's intercession and motherhood, people celebrate their shared humanity: Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Parsees, Sikhs and others. They all share with me the miracles Mary brought to their life. Devotion to Mary transcends religious boundaries,"
he explained.
