The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will deploy 12,000 personnel to assist the Philippine National Police (PNP) in maintaining peace and order during the scheduled visit of Pope Francis in the country next week.

AFP chief of staff Gregorio Pio Catapang said the military contingent includes 6,000 to 7,000 soldiers and 5,000 reservists who will compose the sniper teams and will conduct aerial coverage.

Philippine Air Force chief Jeffrey Delgado said the aerial coverage is necessary to ensure that roads where the convoy of the Pope will pass are secured.

The PNP will serve as the leader among all the law enforcement agencies who will take over the security for Pope Francis. It will deploy 25,000 cops during the Pope's visit.

PNP spokesperson Wilben Mayor said the PNP is preparing thoroughly to ensure that the four-day visit of the Pope will be smooth and safe. He said that one of their focus in their security preparations was how to control the crowd, which is expected to upsurge during the Pope's stay, particularly as he leads a mass in the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta.
