August 29 - View Our Lady of Sorrows' celebration of 24 years of Perpetual Adoration

Article: Roman Catholic Church And The Last Days

Catholic Church rejoiced Aug. 13 when several hundred people celebrated 24 years of Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. Committed adorers and their families were thanked at Mass and an appreciation banquet.

The celebration began with an outdoor procession of the Blessed Sacrament from the Chapel of Our Savior to the church led by the Rev. Monsignor Martin Muller, with the Knights of Columbus as the honor guard. The 314 red roses in the sanctuary represented committed adorers. Seven white roses represented seven committed adorers who died since the last anniversary.

In addition to committed adorers and their substitutes, 7,422 people visited the Chapel during the past year from the countries of Spain and Belize, other local parishes, other Alabama cities, other states, and Puerto Rico. Books bearing the names and petitions of adorers and visitors were brought forward with the bread and wine during the offertory.

The Rev. Monsignor Muller conveyed his gratitude to the adorers for their dedication and acknowledged the sacrifices of their families. "I cannot speak highly enough for the parish," he said. OLS is one of about 1,000 parishes in the United States that has the devotion.

In 1981, Pope John Paul II instituted Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration at St. Peter's Basilica and encouraged parishes to do so.
