For years, I have personally avoided using the
social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others. There are
only so many minutes in a day. My life is already consumed with
answering calls and e-mails, scanning the news, and researching for
commentaries, books, and Power Point presentations. Besides, I have
observed how the social media can be addicting for those who post items
and those who are constantly checking to see what their friends all over
the world are posting at any time of the day or night.
However, in today’s fast-moving world, if one is going to keep up with
the times, we need to be in tune with the times. After lengthy
discussions with some friends and others, Understand The Times has made
the decision to give Facebook a try in order to make our material
available to those who otherwise might not see it.
Let me make something very clear. Our Facebook page will be available
for those who want to connect with Understand The Times and be informed
about the various ministries associated with Understand The Times. If
you become a FB “friend,” I promise you, you will not be overloaded with
moment by moment, blow by blow, updates on my personal life or the
members of my family.
Over the years, ever since our UTT web site was established, a volunteer
e-mail mailing list was the only way our friends could hear from us and
know about the various facets of the ministry. People have had the
freedom to remove their names from the list whenever they want. When we
send out too many items in too short of a period of time I have noticed
some respond by removing themselves from the mailing list. Or, when I
present a biblical perspective on a topic that might offend someone’s
unbiblical tradition or dogma, some will express their emotions by
immediately removing themselves from further contact.
Of course, this is what we expect. The ministry of Understand The Times
is not meant to candy-coat the truth. There are biblical truths that
help to understand the past, the present, and the future, which we
believe people all over the world need to hear. We say this without
apology.
Since the establishment of Bryce Homes International program, now in
five countries with over 65 Bryce Homes and over 300 children, we have
re-evaluated how we might use the social media to better inform our
supporters. Over the past several years, I have made it a priority to
visit each country at least once a year – Myanmar, Philippines, Kenya,
South Africa, and now Mexico. While we do post reports from these
countries on our web site, the added value of getting the information
out via other means would only benefit the expansion of the Bryce Homes
Program worldwide and better inform our present donors.
Further, there are other important items we let people know about that
would receive a broader audience if posted on the social media. These
would include new commentaries, upcoming conferences and meetings, news
alerts, new releases of books, booklets, DVDs, and notification of
important Internet links to radio and TV.
All this to say: Understand The Times is now officially on Facebook. If
you are interested in becoming a friend of the ministry through
Facebook, we welcome you, but, of course, the choice is up to you. If
you are a Facebook user, you know what to do.
