Rick Warren on Religious Pluralism |
|||||

Comments From Understand The Times
For the past several years Understand The Times has been warning about the Purpose Driven Church and the P.E.A.C.E. plan promoted by Pastor Rick Warren. We believe there is a very real danger of leading "evangelical Christians" down the road of apostasy to become part of a pluralistic one religious system that embraces all religions in the name of Christ.
For a number of years, Warren has been promoting his three-legged stool plan he learned from business consultant and mentor Peter Drucker. The plan is designed to incorporate the "faith sector" along with a public sector (government agencies) and private sector (for-profit organizations).
A statement by Warren videotaped and posted on YouTube of a statement he made when he spoke as a member of a panel with other religious leaders and hosted by Tony Blair, explains Rick Warren's position in his own words. In his introduction he stated:
If you are a global business leader, you need to understand that the future of the world is not secularism. It is religious pluralism. You may not like that, but you are going to have to deal with it. The world is becoming more religious, not less. The myth that as education rises religion would go down, is literally, a myth. And if you happen to be in a country where either houses of worship are not strong, you have no idea of the vitality of faith around the world. And see how influential it really is.
Warren further explained the “faith sector” is the necessary component (the third leg) to establish his P.E.A.C.E. Plan and eradicate the major problems that the planet faces. Confirming the players who will take the leadership to make up the faith sector and form the “third-leg” of the three-legged stool, Warren stated:
Though there are major problems on our planet—I call them the global giants—They affect not millions of people but billions of people. Pandemic diseases. Extreme poverty. Illiteracy. Corruption. Global warming. Spiritual emptiness. We cannot solve these problems without involving people of faith and their religious institutions. It isn’t going to happen any other way.
On this planet there are about 20 million Jews. There are about 600 million Buddhists. There are about 800 million Hindus. There are over 1 billion Muslims. And there are 2.3 billion Christians. If you take people of faith out of the equation you have ruled out 5/6 of the world. And if we only leave it up to secular people to solve these major problems, it isn’t going to happen.
Now I have been coming to Davos for some time and we always talk about partnerships. And I am in favor of partnerships. But we have been missing the third leg of the stool. When we talk about partnerships at Davos we basically talk about public and private - public being government and non-government organizations, and private meaning for-profit organizations. A one legged stool will fall over. And a two legged stool will fall over. You have to have three legs. And the third leg of the stool are the people representing faith on this stage and others. It is the faith component.
